Saturday`s Blue Square North Review....
06 March 2010 17:44:00

Fleetwood Town extended their lead at the top of Blue Square North to seven points after Saturday`s round of matches.

Fleetwood damaged Hinckley United`s play-off chances with a 2-0 win in Leicestershire, while second-placed neighbours Southport were held to a goalless draw at Haig Avenue by relegation-threatened Gainsborough Trinity.

Adam Warlow gave Fleetwood a 10th minute lead that Sean Clancy doubled 8 minutes before half time with what proved to be the last goal of the game.

Alfreton Town moved above the Knitters into third place after beating another side in relegation trouble, Gloucester City, at the Impact Arena.

Paul Clayton put the Reds ahead in the 31st minute and new signing Chris Hall added the second 2 minutes into the second half.

Liam Hearn made it virtually game over with number three 9 minutes into the second half, although Matt Rose pulled the Tigers back into the game 3 minutes later.

It wasn`t a great day for many of the play-off chasers, as Droylsden were beaten 2-1 at Tameside neighbours Hyde United, who moved six points clear of the drop zone as a consequence.

Scott Mooney put the Tigers in front after 32 minutes only for Tony Gray to equalise on the hour-mark.

But Chris Lynch scored the all-important winner for Hyde with less than 7 minutes remaining.

AFC Telford United were held to a goalless draw at the New Bucks Head by Solihull Moors, as were another of the contenders, Eastwood Town, held by Stafford Rangers.

That all went to improve Stalybridge Celtic`s chances and they moved to within a point of Tameside neighbours Droylsden, who currently occupy fifth place, after a 4-1 thrashing of bottom-markers Harrogate Town.

Jody Banim broke the deadlock by putting Celtic ahead 7 minutes before the break and Lee Dodgson added number two just 2 minutes after the interval.

Michael Carr scored number three on 64 minutes and Banim`s second with 15 minutes to go was just icing on the cake for Jim Harvey`s side.

Corby Town and Northwich Victoria both breathed new life into their play-off hopes as a consequence of victories on Saturday and results elsewhere going for them.

Steelmen fans suffered a poor first half at the Rockingham Triangle against second-bottom Vauxhall Motors and the second started even worse as Josh Macaulay put Vauxahll Motors ahead.

But the Steelmen were behind for just 2 minutes before Leon Mettam equalised, and the top scorer made it 2-1 less than 7 minutes later.

Sub Jack Defty then bagged a brace for the hosts, who finished with ten-men after another substitute, Ricky Miller, was dismissed.

Northwich are a point and a place better off than Corby after winning with a 51st minute Jamie Vermiglio at Croft Park against Blyth Spartans.

Victory for Ilkeston Town at lowly Redditch United would also have put Kevin Wilson`s side in contention, but they were pegged back after being 2-0 up with goals from Charlie O`Loughlin in the 2nd minute and Gary Ricketts in the 39th by a brace from new signing Shane Benjamin after 54 and 69 minutes for the hosts.
