Tuesday`s Blue Square Bet Premier Review...
18 August 2010 09:56:00

Tuesday proved to be a good night for the new boys in the Blue Square Bet Premier.

Magno Vieira (pictured) scored twice as Fleetwood Town won their first home game at the higher level against Mansfield Town.

Wayne Curtis gave the home side a 5th minute lead when he headed in Ian Craney's cross.

Vieira then doubled their advantage 0n 18 minutes when he converted another pinpoint Craney centre before smashing in the third from the edge of the area on 33 minutes.

Recent recruit Keigan Parker missed Mansfield's best chance when his penalty was saved by home keeper Danny Hurst.

Bath City also marked their return home debut with a 2-1 win over Rushden & Diamonds.

The visitors had silenced Twerton Park early in the contest when Max Porter opened the scoring after just 6 minutes.

The goal came from a Michael Corcoran throw-in that found on-loan Rene Howe, who squared the ball to Porter and he stabbed the ball in from close range.

The home team came close to levelling matters on the quarter hour-mark when Dale Roberts made a smart save to stop a potential own-goal from Alan Power, with the ball deflecting off the midfielder from a Gethin Jones cross.

With the half-hour mark approaching, Sekani Simpson's goalline intervention stopped Lewwis Spence from making it 2-0 and the score remained 1-0 in Diamonds` favour at the break.

But just 30 seconds after the restart City were on level terms, courtesy of a moment of brilliance from Adam Connolly, who stepped in from the right and then powered a left-footed rocket into the back of the net from long range.

Adie Britton's charges shocked Diamonds 12 minutes later when striker Darren Edwards glanced Lewis Hogg's perfectly flighted free kick beyond the reach of Roberts.

Matty McNeil and Matty McGinn both scored twice as another of the promotees, Southport, triumphed in a thrilling game at Aggborough against Kidderminster Harriers.

Harriers took the lead through Michael Briscoe after just 4 minutes but the visitors drew level from McNeil's superb volley on 33 minutes.

The forward then headed in his second a couple of minutes after the break but Nick Wright levelled the scores 10 minutes later.

McGinn fired home on 73 minutes before converting a penalty 6 minutes from time given for a handball by Briscoe, meaning Marc Williams' header 3 minutes later was a mere consolation for Harriers.

Blue Square Bet South runaway champions Newport County earned their first point at Premier level with a battling 1-1 draw against Tamworth at Spytty Park.

Having conceded in the 4th minute against Darlington, County went one better on Tuesday night, finding themselves a goal down after 3 minutes to Michael Wylde’s header.

But after failing to get into their stride in the first period, County improved after the break and they got their reward 20 minutes from time when Sam Foley was felled in the box by Richard Tate, and Craig Reid converted the penalty.

Grimsby Town battled their way to a point in their first home game in the Football Conference against York City.

The Minstermen, last season's beaten play-off finalists, arguably had the better of a tight first half, with star striker Richard Brodie going close.

Grimsby improved after the break and striker Michael Coulson was twice thwarted by York keeper Michael Ingham.

But York had their chances too, with home goalkeeper Kenny Arthur keeping out a Michael Gash shot.

A last-gasp Tommy Wright header completed a dramatic fightback for relegated Darlington as they came from two goals down to draw with Altrincham at Moss Lane.

Chris Denham opened the scoring 5 minutes after half time with a low drive from the edge of the area.

But the game truly sprang into life once Dale Johnson prodded home Ryan Brown's free kick with 13 minutes left.

Firstly keeper Stuart Coburn diverted a cross into his own net before Wright struck to head home Josh Gray's centre.

Stoppage time goals from Danny Kedwell and Ricky Wellard earned AFC Wimbledon a dramatic win over ten-man Histon at Kingsmeadow.

The game looked like finishing goalless but Wimbledon capitalised on Oluwafemi Ilesanmi's sending-off for two yellow cards with just 9 minutes to go.

Remy Clerima brought down skipper Kedwell in the first minute of extra-time and the forward slotted in from the penalty spot.

He then set up Wellard who added the second from 12 yards moments later.

Forest Green Rovers notched up their first win of the season with an emphatic victory over Wrexham at The New Lawn.

The visitors failed to settle into any sort of rhythm early on and were punished in the 20th minute when Lee Smith delivered a cross from the right flank that floated past keeper Scott Sinclair and into the path of Reece Styche, whose aerial execution resulted in the opening goal from his header.

There was no change in the scoreline at the interval as the Welsh outfit clawed their way back into the contest.

But with a quarter of an hour left on the clock, Dave Hockaday's men broke through from a setpiece to double their advantage.

Lee Fowler's corner eluded Wrexham's defenders and an unmarked Luke Jones helped himself to a headed goal to make the score 2-0.

It got worse for Dean Saunders and his side 5 minutes later when Rovers added a third. Fowler was the creative force once again as his perfect through pass created a chance for Yan Klukowski, who slid the ball into the bottom left corner to complete an impressive display.

Matthew Barnes-Homer scored a hat trick as Luton Town overcame nine-man Kettering Town at the Elgood`s Brewert Arena to go top of the table.

Barnes-Homer`s first came from the penalty spot after Kevin Gallen was fouled by Ian Roper, before an unmarked Iyseden Christie headed in for the home side.

Christie then suffered the ignominy of a second bookable offence and Barnes-Homer fired-in from close-range.

The striker finished the scoring from the spot after Roper was sent off for a foul in the area on Danny Crow.

Goals from Simon Russell and Brian Saah helped Cambridge United come back from 2-0 down to earn a point against title-fancies Crawley Town at the Abbey Stadium.

Matty Tubbs headed the visitors in front after less than 4 minutes before turning in Sergio Torres' cross to double their advantage. 3 minutes later

Russell seized on Conal Platt's pass to pull one back on 17 minutes before Saah headed in James Jennings's centre to level after 28 minutes.

Adam Quinn was denied by home keeper Simon Brown as Crawley sought a winner, while the U's Glenn Wilson headed wide.

A brace from Richard Pacquette helped Eastbourne Borough thrash Hayes & Yeading United 5-0 at Priory Lane.

Boro went in front on the half-hour mark when Gary Elphick headed home from close range after the Hayes defence failed to clear Matt Crabb's corner.

Pacquette then doubled the lead right on half time when he netted from inside the six-yard box and Crabb extended their margin 20 minutes from time, firing in from just outside the area.

James Taylor headed home 2 minutes later, and Pacquette smashed a 25-yard shot in injury-time to complete the drubbing.

Martin Brittain scored twice as Gateshead came from behind at Holker Street against Barrow.

Mark Boyd gave the hosts the lead after 29 minutes with a stunning free kick from 30 yards but Brittain quickly levelled 45 minutes later with his own set-piece from just outside the area.

The former Newcastle winger almost scored a second when he flashed a shot over on the stroke of half time. But, after setting up Phil Turnbull to poke home, he completed the scoring from the spot8 minutes from time after Phil Bolland had fouled Gary Mulligan.
