Bishop`s Stortford have announced that former captain and legend Phil Hopkins has joined the club as commercial manager.

Hopkins’ role will be to increase awareness and sponsorship at the club.

The former Stortford skipper returns to the club twenty-two seasons after retiring from a playing career that saw him made a record 543 appearances for the Blues.

After signing from Chelmsford City, he captained Blues to success in the Herts Senior Cup, Herts Charity Cup (twice), Eastern Floodlight Competition, Isthmian League Cup, Isthmian League Full Members Cup (where he hit the winning penalty in a shoot-out) and the national Premier Inter-League Cup where Hyde United were beaten 4-2 in the final at Bromsgrove.

Following the club’s relegation to Isthmian League Division One in 1992, Phil remained loyal the Blues and captained them back to the Premier Division as champions two years later.

He also helped Blues reach the FA Cup First Round proper on three occasions, facing taking Colchester United and Peterborough United to replays, and also facing Brentford.

He was rewarded in 1991 with a testimonial against an Arsenal side that included Andy Cole and David Rocastle.

Phil’s son Liam also made around thirty appearances for Blues during Martin Hayes’ time as manager.

The new Blues commercial manager is looking forward to starting work at the ProKit UK Stadium: “After spending so many years at the club it’s great to be back. I am just making sure my appearance record does not get overtaken!

“Seriously I was asked to help out and can’t wait to get started it’s a great club with a proud past I will need help from all the people in the town and all the loyal supporters.

“We are in a very difficult position at the moment but I for one will give it a go. I know Steve Smith and Mark Hawkes well and they will be hurting.

“I am sure we can turn it around”.
