Rowe To Follow Tarpey`s Record-Breaking Season?

Maidenhead United`s Dave Tarpey's two goals at Weston-super-mare on Saturday saw him break the record for the most scored in a Vanarama National League South season.

His first goal gave United the lead just before half-time and equalled the record.

He broke it 17 minutes from the end, extending Maidenhead's lead to 3-1 and ensuring the Magpies would remain top of the league.

The record was previously held by Adam Birchall, who hit 34 for Dover Athletic in the 2010/11 season.

Tarpey's (pictured) goals also took him clear of Benny Laryea's total of 35 for the Magpies in 1990/91 and means he has the best Maidenhead tally for over fifty years.

He now has 35 league goals for the season and 37 in all competitions.

His next target is the 40-mark reached by Peter Lowen in 1961/62.

The 28-year-old Maidenhead striker`s talents haven`t gone unnoticed.

Despite his age, several Football League sides have been tracking him.

Whilst Tarpey has already surpassed Birchall`s record, it`s going to be very tough task to overhaul the National League`s top division goalscoring record which has stood since the 1983/84 season when Paul Culpin netted 41 times in just 42 matches.

In fact his overall record for Boro was amazing 131 goals in 150 matches so it was little surprise that Coventry City came calling.

Dover Athletic`s Ricky Miller would need to score at least a goal a game for the rest of the season to have any chance of beating Culpin.

However, there`s a much better chance of the North division record being beaten this season.

League leaders AFC Fylde`s Danny Rowe already has 40 goals to his name and needs only 4 more to beat Altrincham`s Damian Reeves who, ironically, scored 43 in the same season as Birchall set his record in the South for Dover.
