Tuesday`s Vanarama National League Round-Up...

Forest Green Rovers recovered from last weekend`s set-back to return to second place in the Vanarama National League table following a 2-1 win at Gander Green Lane against a Sutton United side who are now looking nervously over their shoulder at the drop zone.

It was a mixed night for Forest Green`s Mark Ellis.

After the U`s had started the game well, Ellis headed the visitors in front from a corner in the 32nd minute.

And less than 3 minutes later, striker Christian Doidge made the most of a mistake by on-loan goalkeper Will Puddy to double Rovers` lead.

Despite plenty of second half pressure, and a late red card for Ellis for denying a goalscoring opportunity after he brought down Max Biamou on the edge of the penalty area, Sutton`s only reply came in the 5th minute of stoppage time through sub Kieron Cadogan.

Tranmere Rovers missed the opportunity to move level on points with Forest Green and slip above the Daggers into third place when they were held to a goalless draw by a battling Torquay United outfit at the Launa Windows Stadium.

Torquay started the game level on points with fourth-bottom Woking, but bouyed by last Saturday`s `six-pointer` win at Southport, Kevin Nicholson`s side gave the visitors a tough test.

Rovers had the lions` share of possession throughout the game, but the Gulls hit the bar when Damon Lathorpe`s volley from 25 yards crashed back out and Seam McGinty had a couple of headers go close.

Rovers had their best chance of the game a minute after the restart when Cole

Stockton received the ball with his back to goal, turned and hit a powerful shot which Brendan Moore saved.

And although Micky Mellon`s side kept pushing forward, they couldn't create another clear-cut opportunity and it remained goalless.

Fifth-placed Gateshead were also held to a draw on Tuesday as Macclesfield Town held the in-form Tynesiders to a 1-1 Moss Rose stalemate.

The visitors travelled the Cheshire without a defeat since January and on the back of a six-game winning run.

But after a first half generally bossed by the Silkmen without managing to penetrate a solid-looking Gateshead backline, the deadlock was finally broken 15 minutes from time when the visitors` Manny Smith slotted into an empty net after Macclesfield `keeper Scott Flinders had saved Paddy McLaughlin`s initial effort.

But 8 minutes from time, the Silkmen were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box and John McCombe grabbed his second goal of the season with a powerful header past James Montgomery.

However, Gateshead nearly snatched victory through Wes York with 3 minutes left on the clock.

That draw meant Dover Athletic could have returned to the top five with a win at Meadow Park against a Boreham Wood side who came into the game without a win in nine matches.

But Luke Garrard`s side comprehensively ended that run with a stunning 5-0 win against the Kent outfit.

However, Dover came the closest to scoring in the opening 45 minutes, but Joe Healy`s effort from the edge of the area hit the underside of Grant Smith`s goal and bounced to safety.

Eleven minutes into the second period, it was Wood who drew first blood when he lobbed Dover `keeper Steve Arnold.

Ricky Shakes then doubled the home side`s lead in somewhat controversial fashion when he took the ball off Arnold when the number one claimed he had full possession of it.

On 73 minutes though, Wood put the game to bed when Shakes set up Andrade for his second of the evening.

Shakes was certainly the talk of the terraces as he went on to complete his hat-trick with goals in the 83rd and 86th minutes, both times finishing off breakway attacks.
